Sardinia tour 2019 - Rainer's travel report

Sardinia in May - simply a must!

I can now understand this statement by our treasurer Peter when he registered for the tour after the trip.
On May 01.5.2019st, 16 we started with a total of XNUMX bikes towards Sardinia. The longest journey was definitely the Addi and his wife Anna from Iceland.
The majority drove from Munich, with one group staying overnight in Tuscany from the 01st to the 2nd and a second group setting up their “tents” in Sirmione on Lake Garda on the first day. The remaining 5 participants traveled individually to the ferry to Livorno on May 02.05.2019nd, XNUMX. Unplanned and completely coincidental, the two Munich groups met in an inn in the evening shortly before Livorno.
Thanks to Domenico, our Italian-speaking passenger, we were made some really good pasta in the restaurant, which was actually closed. In Livorno, however, there were a few more wanderings across the harbor before we finally found the right entrance to the ferry. At the subsequent meeting at the ship's bar we had our first Sardinian beer - or was it two ……….?

On the morning of May 03.05rd then we went from Olbia in different groups on different routes to our Hotel Saraceno in Arbatax on the east coast of the island.

My first impression of sardines: Unbelievable - one curve after the other, a mostly clean, smooth roadway with excellent grip and almost no longer straight - the road builders in Sardinia all have to be motorcyclists.
Unfortunately the weather was fresh for southern conditions, a maximum of 12-13 degrees, but dry.

The Hotel Saraceno in Arbatax turned out to be a fairly spacious complex, which is divided into smaller residential units with several rooms each. Breakfast and evening buffet were plentiful - definitely no one has lost weight!

The next day it was rainy, with some of us luckily only having wet roads. The others caught a real downpour and the planned tour was shortened.
Fortunately, the following day it was dry again, but extremely stormy and cold.
In the evening, Addi showed with an eye pinch that he had packed the side cases full of stones to give the machine more weight and tracking stability. And when that was not enough, he also put stones in all the pockets of the suit so that he could stay on the road in the mountains and did not drive into the abyss or the rocks. Whether all Icelanders do this remains his secret.

Meanwhile I realized that I could have left the two shorts and the two bathing trunks and most of the T-shirts at home. More warm things would have been the order of the day. But "Rei in der Tube" helped.

On Monday, May 6.5th, we drove in two groups to Oliena to the Expierence Hotel Su Gologone for lunch. The way there, how could it be otherwise, curve by curve and an impressive landscape.

After the delicious meal and a detailed tour through the lovingly laid out hotel complex, we made our way back to the hotel in smaller groups. We made the detour via Cala Gonone. After hearing so much about this place, I was really excited to see what to expect. Richard gave us the tip to definitely take the old northern concrete road to Cala Gonone. The view is simply terrific.

Then when we came up out of the forest and suddenly the view was clear with a clear blue sky at the place below and the sea, I knew what he meant. Thanks Richard. A delicious Italian ice cream later, we drove back to Arbatax via the excellently developed SS125.

On Tuesday it finally got a bit warmer and a tour to the Costa Rei, southern east coast with the coastal road to Cagliari was on the plan.

On Wednesday, a group was again on the south east coast for "sand and water games by bike". I wanted to drive with Anja a route that had been closed for years north of Villagrande Strisaile. However, after a few kilometers as a result of a mudslide, the route was impassable, so we had to turn back.

To compensate, we went motorcycle hiking through the Gennargentu Nature Park north of Seui.

Unfortunately, Wednesday was already the last day in the hotel and in the evening everyone came together again to celebrate the farewell.

On Thursday morning we went the other way back to Olbia. During this trip, Haukur, Flo and Peter finally visited the elephant rock - Roccia dell'elefante - near Castelsardo.

Overnight the ferry brought us back to the mainland in Livorno.

Some drove home from the ferry early Friday morning. As it turned out later, this was not a bad choice; everyone else who had planned to drive north in 2 or 3 days had to struggle not only with the cold of the ice saints from the Alps, but also with increasing (snow )Rain.

Many thanks to everyone for the nice tour and that everyone came home healthy!

PS: The local tire dealer Sasso Gomme between Tortoli and Arbatax will keep us in good memory - the good grip on the roads in Sardinia cost rubber and a total of 5 bikes got new soles. And at cheaper prices than ours. Thanks to Marco and his team for the excellent service.
