This casual sentence was spoken at a 2022 summer get-together in Grand Junction, Colorado with Johann and Claudia, Tatjana and Peter, Marilee and Haukur and was the starting signal for one of the most exciting motorcycle trips of our lives.
Peter and Tatjana were on their way to Mexico with their motorcycles https://www.2bikesontour.de/ and in the spring of 2023, Marilee and I planned to travel through Baja California and northern Mexico.
Still a vague idea at the time, it became a reality at the 2023 Annual General Meeting. Within a very short time, 14 adventurous members came forward, ready to explore Mexico on two wheels.
Organizing this trip was not a walk in the park. Flo, Hans and Haukur quickly formed an organizing team that took on the challenge of putting this tour together. What followed was an exciting time of planning, dreaming, reading reports and watching videos.
The measured values can be transferred to a PC via the Gateway travel agency in Leipzig we found with Otto's Travel Group in Mexico a partner who supported us with valuable tips and a well thought out route. Particularly helpful was Andreas Zmuda, who supported us with his experience and suggestions. The rental motorcycles were organized, accommodation was reserved, and with the now 22 participants we held several preparatory meetings, Zoom meetings and shared dinners. The anticipation grew immeasurably!
Our journey to Mexico was an experience in itself. Marilee and I drove with our BMW GS1250 over 2,5 km from Austin, Texas, to Mexico City in 1600 days. Other participants flew in from Germany, Switzerland and Iceland - this was also an adventure that many will talk about for a long time.
A special highlight on our route was San Luis Potosi, a city with colonial charm and lively atmosphere. The Plaza de Armas, the heart of the city, enchanted us with its impressive churches, historic buildings and cozy street cafés.
For Marilee, however, this stopover was more than just a visual highlight – she spent many holidays here with her parents as a child. As we strolled through the old streets, she told me about her memories and showed me places that had a special meaning for her. In the evening, we rounded off the day with a cool drink and Enchiladas Potosinas, a regional specialty, before continuing on to Mexico City the next morning.
When we arrived in Mexico City, we met the other participants and started our journey with a good portion of tacos and cold beer. But we didn't stay long - we wanted to get out of the chaos of the big city and into the motorcycle adventure!
The road conditions were the first challenge. The chaotic traffic, the altitude of over 2500 meters and the merciless sun challenged us. In full motorcycle gear we felt "like a chicken in a roasting bag", as someone aptly put it. Our dry mouths tasted of sweat and road dirt - but that's exactly why we were here!
What awaited us in the next few days was a country full of contrasts and breathtaking diversity.

But Mexico didn't just have spectacular landscapes to offer. We immersed ourselves deeply in the culture and visited:
Every day brought new surprises. Sometimes it was the incredible hospitality of the people, sometimes an unexpected change of route that led us to hidden places.
This trip was more than just a motorcycle tour - it was a journey into a fascinating country and into the hearts of our fellow travelers. We laughed, sweated, massaged our shaken bones and shared incredible experiences.
For Marilee and me, this tour was an absolute highlight and we would do it again anytime. Because Mexico not only inspired us as motorcyclists, but also changed us as people.
"To travel is to live!“ – rarely has this saying felt as true as on this tour. Mexico enchanted, surprised and inspired us. I can only say: This trip was unique, and who knows – maybe soon we will say again:
“You could also go on a tour of Mexico with the BMW GS Club!”
